- Knowledge, awareness and practice of the importance of hand-washing amongst children attending state run primary schools in rural Malawi.
- Grimason AM, Masangwi SJ, Morse TD, Jabu GC, Beattie TK, Taulo SE, Lungu K.Author information a Environmental Health , University of Malawi , Blantyre , Malawi .AbstractA study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of hygiene practices in 2 primary schools in Malawi. The study determined: (1) presence of Escherichia coli on the hands of 126 primary school pupils, (2) knowledge, awareness and hygiene practices amongst pupils and teachers and (3) the school environment through observation. Pupil appreciation of hygiene issues was reasonable; however, the high percentage presence of E. coli on hands (71%) and the evidence of large-scale open defaecation in school grounds revealed that apparent knowledge was not put into practice. The standard of facilities for sanitation and hygiene did not significantly impact on the level of knowledge or percentage of school children's hands harbouring faecal bacteria. Evidence from pupils and teachers indicated a poor understanding of principles of disease transmission. Latrines and hand-washing facilities constructed were not child friendly. This study identifies a multidisciplinary approach to improve sanitation and hygiene practices within schools.

- On Rights-Based Partnerships to Measure Progress in Water and Sanitation.
- Satterthwaite M.Author information New York University School of Law, 245 Sullivan St., New York, NY, 10012, USA, margaret.satterthwaite@nyu.edu.AbstractThe right to water and sanitation has emerged from the penumbra of associated rights in the past few decades and now plays an important role in international debates. This right has emerged "from below", through the efforts of social movements seeking transformation in the lives of the world's poor, and it has been recognized "from above", with major international actors such as the United Nations, international financial institutions, and even large corporate actors affirming its existence. As the obligations and entitlements inherent in this right are increasingly clarified, the role of interdisciplinary collaboration has never been more important. This short Commentary examines one such collaborative effort, led by the United Nations Joint Monitoring Programme, to devise post-2015 goals, targets, and indicators for water, sanitation, and hygiene. The Commentary calls for renewed partnerships to advance human rights-based policy among advocates, development practitioners, and water and sanitation experts from diverse scientific fields.

- Postgraduate education in nutrition in south Asia: a huge mismatch between investments and needs.
- Khandelwal S, Paul T, Haddad L, Bhalla S, Gillespie S, Laxminarayan R.Author information Public Health Foundation of India, 14 Community Centre, Panchsheel Park, New Delhi 110016, India. shweta.khandelwal@phfi.org.AbstractBACKGROUND: Despite decades of nutrition advocacy and programming, the nutrition situation in South Asian countries is alarming. We assume that modern training in nutrition at the post graduate level is an important contributor to building the capacity of individuals to think and act effectively when combating undernutrition. In this context, this paper presents a regional situation analysis of master's level academic initiatives in nutrition with a special focus on the type of programme we think is most likely to be helpful in addressing undernutrition at the population level: Public Health Nutrition (PHN).
