Plasmogamy is a stage in the sexual reproduction of fungi. In this stage, the cytoplasm of two parent cells (usually from the mycelia) fuse together without the fusion of nuclei, effectively bringing two haploid nuclei close together in the same cell. This state is followed by karyogamy, where the two nuclei fuse back together and then undergo meiosis to produce spores.[1] [2] The dikaryotic state that comes after plasmogamy will often persist for many generations before the fungi undergoes karyogamy. In lower fungi however, plasmogamy is usually immediately followed by karyogamy.[1]

- In angiosperms, the fusion of a sperm cell with an egg cell, termed plasmogamy, triggers egg activation. Then, karyogamy, migration of the sperm nucleus toward the egg nucleus and their subsequent nuclear fusion, progresses, and de novo gene expression from the zygotic genome is initiated for early

- The majority of microbial eukaryotes have long been considered asexual, though new evidence indicates sex, or sexual-like (parasexual) behaviors that deviate from the usual union of two gametes, among other variant aspects. Over a dozen amoebozoans are implicated to have sexual stages. However, the
