- "The regular routine": proactive policing and adolescent development among young, poor black men.
- Jones N.Author information African American studies, University of California, Berkeley.AbstractOver the last several decades, proactive policing, in which departments use data on reported crimes to determine where local police officers will target their surveillance, has increased police contact with residents in certain neighborhoods. Drawing on field research conducted over a three-year period (2007-2010) among adult and adolescent African American men in a San Francisco neighborhood with a concentrated poor, Black population, I provide an ethnographic account of routine encounters with the police that structure adolescent boys' daily lives in potentially significant ways. I build on Erving Goffman's discussion of "patterns of mortification" to describe how typical encounters unfold in the day-to-day lives of young men and consider the implications of such encounters for healthy adolescent development. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

- Total control: a critical analysis of mandatory HIV testing in U.S. prisons.
- Gagnon M1, Jacob JD, Cormier L.Author information 11Assistant Professors, School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Canada, and 2Research Assistant, University Research Chair in Forensic Nursing, School of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ottawa, Canada.AbstractThe aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between mandatory HIV testing and the institutional management of inmates in U.S. prisons. Mandatory HIV testing has been largely overlooked by the nursing community even though it has important human rights and ethical implications. Drawing on the work of Goffman (1990) on the inner workings of total institutions, the present article critically examines the deployment of mandatory HIV testing in U.S. prisons. To set the stage, we define mandatory HIV testing and describe the methods of HIV testing currently used in U.S. prison settings. Then, we provide a brief overview of the concept of total institution and the mortification process. Finally, we expand on the relationship between mandatory HIV testing and much larger institutional objectives of total control, total structuring, total isolation, and separation of inmates from society (as summarized by Farrington, 1992). And lastly, we provide a brief discussion on the implications of mandatory HIV testing (as a method of HIV testing) from a nursing perspective.

- Shame veiled and unveiled: the shame affect and its re-emergence in the clinical setting.
- Mann M.Author information San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, USA.AbstractThe paper examines the psychoanalytic theory of shame and the importance of developmental aspects of the shame affect. In a clinical setting, the discovery of the shame affect, stemming from unconscious and early traumatic situations, is an important and useful approach in helping the patient access painful memories and defenses against them. The defenses disguise the underlying shame affect; furthermore, vision is being bound up with the searing painful affect of shame. The anticipatory dread of scornful gaze of another person, similar to objective self-awareness can cause mortification. Fear of mortification and being exposed emerges in the clinical setting. Through the recognition of enactments in the transference and countertransference interchange, the analyst helps the patient working through them. Several case vignettes demonstrate these important concepts. Finally, the author discusses how shame in certain situations can be a powerful, positive motivator for human interactions.

- [Therapy or torture: a treatment of gout misunderstood by Gregory of Tours].
- Moog FP.Author information Institut für Geschichte und Ethik der Medizin, Universität zu Köln. fmoog@uni-koeln.deAbstractHistoriarum libri decem, a work written by St. Gregory, the bishop of Tours, is an important contemporary source for the study of the Merovingian times. In Book V 42 Gregory reports the story of Maurilio, the bishop of Cahors in the Southern Gaul, who was strongly suffering from gout. Maurilio treated the illness himself applying a hot iron to his foot and shank. This therapy is already mentioned in the Corpus Hippocraticum. It seems, however, that cauterization was not known to St. Gregory of Tours as a medical treatment of this particular illness. He simply saw in it a sanctifying practice in the sense of penitential mortification. Indeed, for Gregory this interpretation is an important part of his literary aim, as Maurilio is for him a brilliant example of a minister of the Church. Although Maurilio is well-known for his piety, knowledge, and uprightness in diocesan dealings, he voluntarily, as Gregory thinks, submits to ascetic self-castigation.
