- Unusual actions do not always trigger the mentalizing network.
- Ampe L1, Ma N, Van Hoeck N, Vandekerckhove M, Van Overwalle F.Author information 1a Department of Psychology , Vrije Universiteit Brussel , Brussels , Belgium.AbstractPast fMRI research has demonstrated that to understand other people's behavior shown visually, the mirror network is strongly involved. However, the mentalizing network is also recruited when a visually presented action is unusual and/or when perceivers think explicitly about the intention. To further explore the conditions that trigger mentalizing activity, we replicated one of such studies (de Lange, Spronk, Willems, Toni, & Bekkering, 2008, Current Biology, 18, 454) under the minimal instruction to "view" pictures of unusual actions, without giving any "intention" instruction as in the original study. Contrary to earlier research, merely viewing unusual actions did not activate mentalizing areas. Instead, the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex was activated. We conclude that unusual actions are not sufficient by themselves to trigger mentalizing. In order to activate the mentalizing network without an intention instruction, a richer action context informative of the implausibility of the action might be a prerequisite.

- Technical clarification to Silbert and Thomas (2013): "Decisional separability, model identification, and statistical inference in the general recognition theory framework".
- Thomas RD1, Silbert NH.Author information 1Department of Psychology, Miami University, Oxford, OH, 45056, USA, thomasrd@MiamiOH.edu.AbstractWe offer a minor technical correction to the published proof of part (ii) of the main theorem in Silbert and Thomas (Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 20, 1-20, 2013) that somewhat limits the scope of the equivalence observed in that work. Specifically, in order for a mean shift integrality with decisional separability to be mimicked by a perceptually separable but nondecisionally separable configuration, one needs to assume stimulus invariance. This holds when all of the covariance matrices in the stimulus configuration are equal to each other. We note that part (i) of the theorem is unaffected by this modification; an empirical finding of perceptual separability and the failure of decisional separability can be mimicked by a perceptually nonseparable, decisionally separable configuration without restricting the covariance matrices to be equal. We also note that stimulus invariance is often assumed in simple designs (e.g., Macmillan & Ornstein in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 97, 1261-1285, 1998), due to the implausibility of different perceptual correlations being present within stimuli perched very closely in perceptual space.

- Online processing of novel noun-noun compounds: eye movement evidence.
- Cohen AL1, Staub A.Author information 1a Department of Psychology , University of Massachusetts Amherst , Amherst , MA , USA.AbstractThree eye-tracking experiments investigated online processing of novel noun-noun compounds. The experiments compared processing of compounds that are difficult to interpret in isolation (e.g., dictionary treatment) and more easily interpretable adjective-noun and noun-noun sequences (e.g., rough treatment and torture treatment). In all three experiments, first-pass reading time was longer on the head noun (treatment) when it occurred in a difficult compound. Further, a preceding sentence that provided a potential interpretation of the critical compound reduced processing difficulty, but this modulation by context occurred in later eye movement measures, or downstream of the compound itself. These results are interpreted in relation to the eye movement literature on the processing of implausibility, which demonstrates a similar pattern in which the disruption in early eye movement measures is not alleviated by context, but context does have a later effect. The results also suggest that the interpretation of noun-noun compounds in context does initially depend on the availability of an out-of-context interpretation.
