Electronic address: email@example.com.AbstractThe aim of the present study was to formulate the relationship between the perceived discomfort and the joint moment ratio for twelve joint motion directions of the upper limb by considering the between-subject variability, and to investigate the effect of joint motion direction. Three approximation models (i.e., linear, exponential, and logistic function models) were compared in terms of the accuracy of predicting the perceived discomfort, and the logistic function was selected because its average error was lowest. The concept of L-R fuzzy number was used to consider the individual variability of perceived discomfort, and a simplified distribution of perceived discomfort was represented. Cluster analysis showed that the twelve discomfort functions formed two clusters: one for elbow flexion and a second for the remaining joint motions. The data show that elbow flexion is more sensitive than other joint motions to increases in the joint moment ratio.

We report a case of tumoral calcinosis at the first meta-tarso-phalangeal (MTP) joint of foot with hallux valgus deformity associated with bunion which required resection. Surgical excision of the calcific mass alone, without surgery to the minimal hallux valgus, resulted in resolution of symptoms, without recurrence of the lesion. Subsequently, speculative etiology, differential diagnostic considerations as well as the therapeutic interventions for tumoral calcinosis are discussed taking into consideration the current literature. We conclude that tumoral calcinosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a painful mass that develops in the small joints of the foot.

When properly diagnosed and treated without delay, both types of dislocations have a good prognosis. We describe a case of convergent elbow dislocation in a 16-year-old boy. The patient underwent operative intervention and demonstrated full range of motion at the 4-year follow-up. Our second case describes an 11-year-old boy with a divergent elbow dislocation associated with an ipsilateral distal radius fracture and distal radioulnar joint dislocation. The patient showed full range of motion 1 year after closed reduction and casting and had no residual deformities or abnormalties.
