- Metabolomics for in situ environmental monitoring of surface waters impacted by contaminants from both point and nonpoint sources.
- Skelton DM1, Ekman DR, Martinović-Weigelt D, Ankley GT, Villeneuve DL, Teng Q, Collette TW.Author information 1U.S. EPA , National Exposure Research Laboratory, 960 College Station Rd., Athens, Georgia 30605, United States.AbstractWe investigated the efficacy of metabolomics for field-monitoring of fish exposed to wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents and nonpoint sources of chemical contamination. Lab-reared male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas, FHM) were held in mobile monitoring units and exposed on-location to surface waters upstream and downstream of the effluent point source, as well as to the actual effluent at three different WWTP sites in Minnesota. After four days of exposure, livers were collected, extracted, and analyzed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy and GC-MS to characterize responses of the hepatic metabolome. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed distinct metabolite profile changes in response to effluent exposure from each of the three WWTPs. Differences among locations (i.e., upstream, downstream, and effluent) within each of the three sites were also identified. These observed differences comport with land-use and WWTP characteristics at the study sites. For example, at one of the sites, the metabolomic analyses suggested a positive interactive response from exposure to WWTP effluent and nearby nonpoint (likely agricultural related) contamination. These findings demonstrate the utility of metabolomics as a field-based technique for monitoring the exposure of fish to impacted surface waters.

- Measuring large optical transmission matrices of disordered media.
- Yu H1, Hillman TR, Choi W, Lee JO, Feld MS, Dasari RR, Park Y.Author information 1Department of Physics, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Daejeon 305-701, South Korea.AbstractWe report a measurement of the large optical transmission matrix (TM) of a complex turbid medium. The TM is acquired using polarization-sensitive, full-field interferometric microscopy equipped with a rotating galvanometer mirror. It is represented with respect to input and output bases of optical modes, which correspond to plane wave components of the respective illumination and transmitted waves. The modes are sampled so finely in angular spectrum space that their number exceeds the total number of resolvable modes for the illuminated area of the sample. As such, we investigate the singular value spectrum of the TM in order to detect evidence of open transmission channels, predicted by random-matrix theory. Our results comport with theoretical expectations, given the experimental limitations of the system. We consider the impact of these limitations on the usefulness of transmission matrices in optical measurements.

- Perceptions of efficacy, expressed emotion, and the course of schizophrenia: the case of emotional overinvolvement.
- Breitborde NJ1, López SR, Aguilera A, Kopelowicz A.Author information 1*Department of Psychiatry, University of Arizona, Tucson; †Department of Psychology, University of Southern California; ‡School of Social Welfare, University of California, Berkeley; and §David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles.AbstractAlthough it is clear that expressed emotion (EE) is associated with the course of schizophrenia, proposed models for this association have struggled to account for the relationship between the EE index of emotional overinvolvement (EOI) and relapse. To expand our understanding of the EOI-relapse association, we first attempted to replicate the finding that the EOI-relapse association is curvilinear among 55 Mexican-Americans with schizophrenia and their caregiving relatives. Second, we evaluated whether the caregivers' perception of their ill relative's efficacy may account for the EOI-relapse association. Our results comport with past findings with regard to the curvilinear nature of the EOI-relapse association among Mexican-Americans and suggest that EOI may only seem to be a risk factor of relapse because of its strong association with a true risk factor for relapse (i.e., caregivers' perception of their ill relative's efficacy).
