This article is about a geologic phenomenon. For the rock band, see Cave In.
Illustration of mine collapse aftermath, from 1878
A cave-in is a collapse of a geologic formation, mine or structure which may occur during mining or tunneling. Geologic structures prone to spontaneous cave-ins include alvar, tsingy and other limestone formations, but can also include lava tubes and a variety of other subsurface rock formations. Glacier caves and other ice formations are very prone to collapse from exposure to warm temperatures or running water.
In mining, the term roof fall is used to refer to a range of collapses, ranging from the fall of a single flake of shale to collapses that form sink holes that reach to the surface. However, roof falls in mining are not all accidental. In longwall mining and retreat mining, miners systematically remove all support from under large areas of the mine roof, allowing it to settle just beyond the work area. The goal in such mining methods is not to prevent roof fall and the ensuing surface subsidence, but rather to control it.

- Transcranial segment of the trigeminal nerve: macro-/microscopic anatomical study using sheet plastination.
- Liang L1, Diao Y, Xu Q, Zhang M.Author information 1Department of Anatomy, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.AbstractBACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) may be caused by the mechanical compression of the trigeminal nerve. In the studies on the location of mechanical irritation and entrapment of the nerve, attention has been paid mostly to vascular structures in the subarachnoid space. Few studies have explored the relationship between the trigeminal nerve and its surrounding structures along its course in the skull base. The aim of this study was to examine and trace the root, ganglion and three divisions of the trigeminal nerve and their relationships with surrounding soft and bony structures in the skull base, and to identify the likely mechanical compression points.

- Highly Sensitive Quantitative PCR for the Detection and Differentiation of Pseudogymnoascus destructans and Other Pseudogymnoascus Species.
- Shuey MM1, Drees KP, Lindner DL, Keim P, Foster JT.Author information 1Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.AbstractWhite-nose syndrome is a fungal disease that has decimated bat populations across eastern North America. Identification of the etiologic agent, Pseudogymnoascus destructans (formerly Geomyces destructans), in environmental samples is essential to proposed management plans. A major challenge is the presence of closely related species, which are ubiquitous in many soils and cave sediments and often present in high abundance. We present a dual-probe real-time quantitative PCR assay capable of detecting and differentiating P. destructans from closely related fungi in environmental samples from North America. The assay, based on a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) specific to P. destructans, is capable of rapid low-level detection from various sampling media, including sediment, fecal samples, wing biopsy specimens, and skin swabs. This method is a highly sensitive, high-throughput method for identifying P. destructans, other Pseudogymnoascus spp., and Geomyces spp. in the environment, providing a fundamental component of research and risk assessment for addressing this disease, as well as other ecological and mycological work on related fungi.
