Killian or Cillian , as a given name, is an Anglicized version of the Irish name Cillín. Killian is the more radical anglisation of the name as there is no 'K' in the Gaelic alphabet, the 'C' carrying a hard 'K' sound as in the given name Kieran or (more corretly) Ciaran.
The most obvious meaning of the name is "little church", a reference to someone prayerful or spiritual, cill meaning "church" in Gaelic while the suffix "-ín" is used affectionately to indicate a 'pet' or diminutive status. An alternative meaning for the name is "Church of John", cill-ian, Ian being the Gaelic version of "John".[1] This latter interpretation is less plausible as 1) the Ian or Iain is Scots Gaelic (the Irish Gaelic equivalent of John being "Sean"), and 2) it relies on the anglicised version of the apparently older Irish original, Cillín. The Rev. Patrick Woulfe wrote that Cillian is the 'pet' diminutive of Ceallach which means "war" or "strife", but equally Ceall may simply be a varaint of Cill.[2]
The name is said to derive from Saint Kilian, an Irish missionary to Germany in the 7th century, who, according to the Acta Sanctorum, was born in Mullagh, County Cavan, Ireland C.640, Ireland, and departed for his mission to the continent with 12 Apostles from Kilmacologue in th parish of Tuosist, Co Kerry, Ireland. He was martyrd in Wurtzburg, Franconia, Germany in 689, and subsequently became its patron saint. His feast is celbrated in Wurtzburg on the 8th of July.
Killian, as a surname, is found in both Ireland and Germany. It was originally spelled Ó Cillín in Irish before being Anglicized into Killeen as well as Killian. Spelling variations for Killian include Kilian, Killion, and others.[3]
