Borrelia afzelii is a species of Borrelia[1] that can infect various species of vertebrate and invertebrates.
Among thirty Borrelia known species, it is one of 4 which is likely to infect humans causing a variant of Lyme disease.
It seems fairly common that coinfection combine this Borrelia specie to another one or to other pathogens carried by the vector, which appears to be in most cases the tick.

- Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), transmitted by Ixodes spp. ticks, is the causative agent of Lyme disease. Although Ixodes spp. ticks are distributed in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, evidence for the presence of B. burgdorferi s.l. in South America apart from Uruguay is lacking. We
