- 4-11月にかけて生息し、ネズミや小鳥などを補食している。
- 体長は45-75cm程度で、頭は幅広く三角形で、頸部は細くびれ、胴は太く、尾は短い。
- 体色は茶褐色から赤褐色まで変位が多く、背には暗褐色の銭型斑紋を有する。
- 動作は緩慢で元来温和な蛇であるが、体色が保護色となり気づかずに近づいた結果、かまれることが多い。
