Bed size refers to the dimensions of a mattress and the names by which standard sizes are called. Beds themselves vary widely in size according to the size of the frame and degree of ornamentation but are sold according to the size of mattress they take. The dimensions and names vary considerably around the world, with most countries having their own standards and terminology.
Modern sizes in metric system countries are 200 centimetres (79 in) long. The traditional "double" size standard among English speaking countries, based on Imperial units, is 4'6" by 6'3" (54 by 75 inches (137 by 191 cm)), but the sizes for other bed types tend to vary.

For North American, as well as British and Irish beds, the sizes are traditionally specified in US customary units or Imperial units[citation needed] (the metric equivalents given here are approximate). For Latin America, mainland Europe, and Japan, the sizes are specified in metric[citation needed] (US/Imperial equivalents are approximate).
United States and Canada
Standard North American sizes
A pillowtop queen-size mattress.
Modern manufacturing conventions have resulted in a limited number of standard sizes of commercial bedding for mattresses and box springs. Imported beds vary by country of origin as per the table above.
These dimensions are for the mattress—the actual bed frame will be a little larger in order to fully encompass and support the mattress. The thickness of the mattress may vary considerably.[citation needed]
Standard North American sizes
The standard bed sizes are:[5]
- Twin
- 39 in × 75 in (99 cm × 191 cm)
- Full or double
- 54 in × 75 in (137 cm × 191 cm)
- Queen
- 60 in × 80 in (152 cm × 203 cm)
- King
- 76 in × 80 in (193 cm × 203 cm)
- A king-sized bed may have a king-sized box spring (foundation), or two smaller box-springs (each somewhat larger than that of a twin bed under a king-sized mattress.
- California king
- 72 in × 84 in (183 cm × 213 cm)

In addition to the sizes described above, other sizes have found some acceptance in North America, including:
- Super single
- 48 in × 84 in (122 cm × 213 cm)[citation needed]
- Olympic queen
- 66 in × 80 in (168 cm × 203 cm)[citation needed]

- 70 in × 82 in (178 cm × 208 cm)[6]
- California King Waterbed Insert

- 70 in × 82 in (178 cm × 208 cm)[6]
UK and Ireland sizes
Standard UK and Ireland sizes
Most modern beds/mattresses sold in the UK and Ireland are constructed using imperial dimensions[3] but are sometimes sold in their approximate metric equivalents.[7]
- Toddler bed
- (about 70 cm × 140 cm)
- Small single
- 30" by 72" (about 75 cm × 180 cm)
- Standard single
- 36" × 75", also sold as 90 cm × 190 cm.[3]
- Queen or small double or three-quarter
- 48" × 75" (approximately 120 cm × 190 cm).
- Standard double
- 54" × 75", also sold as 135 cm × 190 cm.[3]
- King
- 60" × 78", also sold as 150 cm × 200 cm.[3]
- Super king (occasionally incorrectly referred to in the UK as "queen"[citation needed])
- 72" × 78", also sold as 180 cm × 200 cm.[3]
Swedish Sizes are sold in the UK; in particular they are the standard sizes supplied by IKEA.[8] The length of "standard" single and double mattresses is 200 cm, rather than the usual 190 cm.
The European king size (160 cm × 200 cm) as well as contemporary Italian beds and furniture have become more popular.[9]
Other sizes (bespoke beds) can be made to order; bed, mattress, and bed linen must all be of compatible size.[9]
Mainland European sizes
Italy
In Italy, beds are classified by name. Most common sizes are:
- Una piazza or singolo (which means "single"[10])
- 90 cm (31–35 in) wide by 200 cm long
- Due piazze (which means "double") or matrimoniale (for married people)
- 160 cm (62.99 inches) or less common 180 cm (71 in) wide x 200 cm long
Less common are:
- Una piazza e mezza
- 120 cm (47 in) wide (same length: 200 cm)
- Piazza francese
- 140 cm (55 in) wide
Norway
In the Scandinavian countries, standards vary from one country to another. In Norway, these sizes are used:[citation needed]
- Small single
- 75 cm × 200 cm (30 in × 79 in)
- Single
- 90 cm × 200 cm (35 in × 79 in)
- Large single
- 120 cm × 200 cm (47 in × 79 in)
- Queen
- 150 cm × 200 cm (60 in × 79 in—equal to two small single mattresses)
- King
- 180 cm × 200 cm (71 in × 79 in—equal to two single mattresses)
Beds/mattresses are often available also in extra long 220 cm (87 in) length. To cover the California king size mattress, waterbeds are also sold in Europe with size of 180 cm × 210 cm. Some older beds are only 190 cm (75 in) long, while antique beds often are even shorter as, on average, people are taller now than they used to be.[citation needed]

The following bed sizes are available in New Zealand:[11]
