- Simulating the scanning of a focused beam through scattering media using a numerical solution of Maxwell's equations.
- Elmaklizi A, Schäfer J, Kienle A.AbstractABSTRACT. A highly efficient method based on Maxwell's theory was developed, which enables the calculation of the scanning of a focused beam through scattering media. Maxwell's equations were numerically solved in two dimensions using finite difference time domain simulations. The modeling of the focused beam was achieved by applying the angular spectrum of plane waves method. The scanning of the focused beam through the scattering medium was accomplished by saving the results of the near field obtained from one simulation set of plane waves incident at different angles and by an appropriate post processing of these data. Thus, an arbitrary number of focus positions could be simulated without the need to further solve Maxwell's equations. The presented method can be used to efficiently study the light propagation of focused beam through scattering media which is important, for example, for different kinds of scanning microscopes.

- A non-autonomous stochastic predator-prey model.
- Buonocore A, Caputo L, Pirozzi E, Nobile AG.Author information Dipartimento di Matematica e Applicazioni "R. Caccioppoli", Universita di Napoli Federico II, Via Cintia, 80126 Napoli, Italy. aniello.buonocore@unina.it.AbstractThe aim of this paper is to consider a non-autonomous predator-prey-like system, with a Gompertz growth law for the prey. By introducing random variations in both prey birth and predator death rates, a stochastic model for the predator-prey-like system in a random environment is proposed and investigated. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equation is solved to obtain the joint probability density for the prey and predator populations and the marginal probability densities. The asymptotic behavior of the predator-prey stochastic model is also analyzed.

- Immunological challenges for peptide-based immunotherapy in glioblastoma.
- Mohme M, Neidert MC, Regli L, Weller M, Martin R.Author information Department of Neurosurgery, University Hospital Zurich, 8091 Zurich, Switzerland; Center for Molecular Neurobiology Hamburg, University Medical Center Eppendorf, 20251 Hamburg, Germany. Electronic address: malte.mohme@zmnh.uni-hamburg.de.AbstractGlioblastoma is the most aggressive primary tumor of the central nervous system with a medium overall survival of 7-15months after diagnosis. Since tumor cells penetrate the surrounding brain tissue, complete surgical resection is impossible and tumor recurrence is almost a certainty. New treatment modalities are therefore needed, and these should be able to trace, identify, and kill dispersed tumor cells with great accuracy. Immunological approaches in principle meet these needs. Unfortunately, due to profound tumor-associated mechanisms of immunosuppression and -evasion, immunotherapeutic strategies like peptide vaccination have so far not been translated into clinical success. If future, peptide-based vaccination approaches shall be successful in glioblastoma therapy, multiple questions need to be solved including identification of suitable antigens, route and mode of vaccination, preparation of the tumor-bearing "host" and antagonizing, as much as this is possible, glioblastoma-associated mechanisms of immune evasion and poor vaccination response. In this review we will address the immunological challenges of glioblastoma and discuss key aspects that have rendered successful immunotherapy difficult in the past.
