T細胞，B細胞などに作用して細胞増殖，炎症反応を誘起するサイトカインであるインターロイキン1β（IL-1β）の前駆体を切断して機能的成熟型に変換する酵素であり，システインプロテアーゼの一種。

インターロイキン－1βは血液凝固、免疫系、そして炎症反応において重要な役割を担っている。また近接細胞との間での傍分泌シグナルとして、血液中を運ばれると内分泌のホルモンのようなシグナルとしてもはたらく。インターロイキン－１βはマクロファージと単球から放出される。インターロイキン－１β変換酵素(interleukin-1β converting enzyme:ICE)はインターロイキン－１βを活性化する蛋白質である。ICEはシステインプロテアーゼであり、最近発見されたシステインプロテアーゼの新しいクラスに属する最初のタンパク質である。集合的にこれらの新しいシステインプロテアーゼはカスパーゼとして知られる。カスパーゼはアポトーシスあるいはプログラムされた細胞死に大きく関与している。アポトーシスやプログラムされた細胞死とは細胞が生化学的に系統立った経路を経て壊れることである。
