- Laboratory evaluation of Fendona 6SC treated bednets and Interceptor long-lasting nets against Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Burkina Faso.
- Badolo A1, Guelbéogo WM, Tiono AB, Traoré A, Sagnon N, Sirima SB.Author information 1Centre National de Recherche et de Formation sur le Paludisme (CNRFP), BP 2208, Ouagadougou 01, Burkina Faso, a.badolo@gmail.com.AbstractInsecticide-treated bednets play a cornerstone role in the efforts to control malaria. Bednets entomological efficacy is the determinant factor of their use to control malaria. In this study, we compared under laboratory conditions, the efficacy of two long-lasting nets (PermaNet versus Interceptor) and two treatments kits K-O TAB (deltamethrin) versus Fendona 6SC (alpha-cypermethrin) against Anopheles gambiae s.l. malaria vectors. The efficacy of washed and unwashed bednets was assessed by contact bioassays using World Health Organization (WHO) cones. Three to five-days-old mosquitoes were exposed to the netting for 3 min; the median and 95% knockdown time, the after 24 h mortality was recorded for each type of bednet. The mortality after 24 h was equivalent for the Fendona 6SC treated bednets and the K-O TAB treated bednets [79.4% confidence limits (CL) (73.9-84.6) and 74% CL (68.3-80.0), respectively]. However, the Fendona 6SC treated bednets were superior in 50% knockdown time to the K-O TAB treated bednets [7.8 min, CL (6.5-9.0) and 15. 2 min, CL (14.0-16.4), respectively]. Washed Interceptor and PermaNet bednets showed similar efficacy in terms of 50% knockdown times. Mortality after 24 h was similar from the fifth to the twentieth wash, but PermaNet performed better than Interceptor for the first four washes and for unwashed bednets. This study showed that Fendona 6SC kit and the Interceptor bednets have exhibited consistent comparable efficacy in the laboratory compared to the well known and in use K-O TAB kit and PermaNet bednets.

- Adult of Dirofilaria repens in a dog with recurrent multiple subcutaneous nodular lesions.
- Giudice E1, Di Pietro S, Gaglio G, Di Giacomo L, Bazzano M, Mazzullo G.Author information 1Dipartimento di Scienze Veterinarie, Università degli Studi di Messina, Polo Universitario Annunziata, 98168, Messina, Italy.AbstractSubcutaneous dirofilariosis is a zoonosis parasitizing the dog, transmitted by Culicidae mosquitoes. An increasing number of new cases have been reported both in dogs and in humans all over the world. The aim of this work was to describe an uncommon case of recurrent multiple subcutaneous nodules by Dirofilaria repens in a 2-year-old dog. Surgical excision of two nodules on both hind limbs revealed a single thread-like live nematode and multiple parasite fragments, respectively. The parasite was morphologically identified as an adult female of D. repens. Haematoxylin-eosin tissue sections of nodules revealed a diffuse pyogranulomatous angiocentric dermatitis with an intense eosinophilic infiltrate throughout the dermis. One month post-surgery, a new nodular lesion was detected on the right thigh and resolved spontaneously in a few weeks. During the following 3 months, two other nodules were briefly noted both on the right hip and on the left side of the chest. The dog was periodically treated with milbemycin oxime and praziquantel, starting a week before the appearance of the first nodule. Microfilariae were not detected neither in the bloodstream nor in fine-needle aspirates at any time, and the diagnosis was made only after surgery. Practitioners should consider dirofilariosis in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous swellings, especially if they have a recurrent behaviour, previously described in humans but not in dogs.

- Mixed infection by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Troglostrongylus brevior in kittens from the same litter in Italy.
- Di Cesare A1, Frangipane di Regalbono A, Tessarin C, Seghetti M, Iorio R, Simonato G, Traversa D.Author information 1Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Teramo, Teramo, Italy.AbstractParasitic nematodes affecting the respiratory system of felids are spreading in endemic regions and emerging in previously free areas and/or hosts. This is particularly the case of the cat lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, which can cause respiratory signs in cats all over the world. Additionally, Troglostrongylus brevior has been recently found in domestic cats from Ibiza Island in Spain and Southern Italy. The present paper describes the first mixed infection by these lungworms in kittens belonging to the same litter. Two ∼10-11 weeks old kittens were found infected by A. abstrusus and T. brevior at a copromicroscopical examination. The identity of larvae shed by faeces were confirmed with an already validated PCR specific for A. abstrusus and a novel DNA-based assay specific for T. brevior. One kitten showed severe respiratory signs and died despite an anthelmintic treatment, while the other had a subclinical infection and recovered after a parasiticide administration with milbemycin oxime. New insights into epidemiology, biology, clinical aspects and control of these parasitoses are discussed.
