- Confirmed efficacy of topical nifedipine in the treatment of facial wrinkles.
- Calabrò G, De Vita V, Patalano A, Mazzella C, Lo Conte V, Antropoli C.Author information Department of Dermatology, University of Naples Federico II , Naples , Italy.AbstractIntroduction: Over the past two decades, there has been increasing demand for aesthetic procedures to reverse the effects of aging, particularly in the facial area. Recently, topical nifedipine has been proposed for its anti-wrinkle efficacy. Objective: To confirm the anti-wrinkle efficacy of a 0.5% nifedipine-based topical formulation. Materials and methods: A randomized study was conducted in 20 healthy female volunteers, aged between 45 and 60 years, with moderate to moderately severe facial wrinkles. 10 volunteers applied a 0.5% nifedipine cream and 10 volunteers applied a good moisturizer twice daily for 90 days. The aesthetic improvement was evaluated by a blinded investigator using the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS). Anti-wrinkles effectiveness was also objectively assessed by measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL), moisture levels of the stratum corneum, skin viscoelasticity and skin folding capacity by instrumental analysis. Results: Post-treatment WSRS score was significantly lower than the baseline WSRS score only in the nifedipine group. The mean WSRS score at T0 was 3.85 and at T3 1.84 in the nifedipine group, while the mean WSRS score at T0 was 3.78 and at T3 3.36 in the control group. Corneometry showed significant increases in measures of skin hydration and TEWL values decreased in all the patients of both groups, indicating a trend toward improved integrity of skin. Dermolab® recorded significant increases in measures of skin hydration in the nifedipine group and a lower increase in the control group. The colorimetric evaluation showed that use of the tested product resulted in significant overall lightening of the skin during use compared with baseline, while the moisturizer didn't produce any change of skin lightening parameters. Conclusion: The tested topical preparation is effective in reducing facial wrinkles' depth and in increasing skin hydration and elasticity.

- Physicochemical and structural characterization of iron-sucrose formulations: a comparative study.
- Barot BS, Parejiya PB, Mehta DM, Shelat PK, Shah GB.Author information Department of Pharmaceutics, K.B. Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research , Kadi Sarva Vishwavidyalaya, Gandhinagar , India.AbstractAbstract Intravenous polynuclear iron formulations are vital components in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia associated with chronic kidney disease as well as other diseases associated with gastro-intestinal and cardio-vascular system. Intravenous iron preparations consist of iron-carbohydrate nanoparticles with iron-oxyhydroxide as a core covered by carbohydrate shell. These preparations should be very well characterized in terms of their physicochemical properties and pharmacological profile in order to establish safety and efficacy. The present research work was aimed to physicochemically characterize a new generic iron-sucrose preparation (IS-Claris) and establish its equivalency with the reference product (Venofer®). Various analytical techniques including gel permeation chromatography (GPC), mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF), absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (proton and (13)C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed. It was observed that the specifications of IS-Claris obtained through these analyses reflect those of Venofer® and hence the two formulations were considered comparable.

- Assessing therapeutic effectiveness of scalp treatments for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, part 2: the impact of gender and ethnicity on efficacy.
- Bacon RA, Mizoguchi H, Schwartz JR.Author information The Procter and Gamble Company , Cincinnati, OH , USA.AbstractBackground: Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD) are common and troublesome scalp conditions that affect individuals independent of gender or ethnicity. Aim: To evaluate whether population gender or ethnic origins impact the magnitude of anti-dandruff therapeutic benefit obtained from use of a potentiated zinc pyrithione shampoo treatment. Methods: A retrospective evaluation of anti-dandruff clinical data covering a single-product technology was conducted to assess whether statistically meaningful differences were observed for gender or ethnic sub-populations. An analysis of covariance was performed on the pooled subject-level data. Results: Meta-analysis of clinical data involving 1114 subjects from seven trials demonstrated the lack of statistically significant impact of gender on flaking or selected biomarker measures. Similarly, a smaller population chosen to assess ethnicity demonstrated the lack of differences between Asian and Caucasian clinical sub-population responses (flaking severity). Conclusion: Through the use of both expert symptom grading and objective biomarker assessments, therapeutic efficacy of a potentiated zinc pyrithione shampoo was found to be independent of gender and ethnicity, being consistent with the lack of functional differences in skin from these populations.
