Dithionic acid, H2S2O6, is a chemical compound known only in solution.[2]
Salts
Main article: Dithionate
Dithionic acid is dibasic and salts called dithionates are known. No acid salts have been discovered. All dithionates are readily soluble in water.[2] They are mild oxidizing and mild reducing agents. The structure of dithionate ion is like ethane, but two SO3 groups adopt an almost eclipsed conformation. The S—S length is 2.15 Å; S—O bonds are rather short with bond length of 1.43 Å.
Synthesis
Dithionates can be made by oxidizing a sulfite (from the +4 to the +5 oxidation state), but on a larger scale they are made by oxidizing a cooled aqueous solution of sulfur dioxide with MnO2:
- 2MnO2 + 3SO2 → MnS2O6 + MnSO4
The manganese dithionate solution formed can then be converted to dithionate salts of other metals by metathesis reactions:
- Ba2+(aq) + MnS2O6(aq) + MnSO4(aq) → BaSO4(s)↓ + BaS2O6·2H2O(aq)
Concentrated solutions of dithionic acid can subsequently be obtained treating a barium dithionate solution with sulfuric acid:
- BaS2O6(aq) + H2SO4(aq) → H2S2O6(aq) + BaSO4(s)↓

- Sensitive determination of anions in saliva using capillary electrophoresis after transient isotachophoretic preconcentration.
- Xu Z, Doi T, Timerbaev AR, Hirokawa T.Author information Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering, Hiroshima University, 1-4-1 Kagamiyama 1, Higashi-hiroshima 739-8527, Japan.AbstractA transient isotachophoresis-capillary electrophoresis (tITP-CE) system for the determination of minor inorganic anions in saliva is described. The complete separation and quantification of bromide, iodide, nitrate, nitrite, and thiocyanate has been achieved with only centrifugation and dilution of the saliva sample. In-line tITP preconcentration conditions, created by introduction of the plugs of 5 mM dithionic acid (leading electrolyte) and 10 mM formic acid (terminating electrolyte) before and after the sample zone, respectively, allowed the limits of direct UV absorption detection (at 200 nm) to be up to 50-fold improved as compared with CE without tITP. As a result, nitrate and thiocyanate were still detectable at 4.6 and 3.8 microgl(-1), respectively, in 1000 times diluted saliva. The daily variations of anionic concentrations in saliva samples taken from a smoking health volunteer were discussed based on the results of tITP-CE analysis. It was confirmed that the thiocyanate concentration in saliva noticeably increased after smoking. This is apparently the first report on simultaneous quantification of more than four anionic salivary constituents using CE.

- New leading electrolyte for the direct determination of chloride and other anions in analytical isotachophoresis.
- Meissner T, Eisenbeiss F, Jastorff B.Author information Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.AbstractIn a number of experiments it was shown that the dithionate ion possesses a higher effective mobility than the chloride ion in aqueous solution, thus enabling the direct and simultaneous isotachophoretic determination of chloride and other anions. Using an acid-base titration, we found only one pKa value for dithionic acid, which is in contrast to the two pKa values stated in the literature. Based on this pKa value, theoretical calculations and the experimentally observed effective mobility of the dithionate ion indicate a higher effective mobility compared to the chloride ion from pH 3. Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the dithionate, its unrestricted use as isotachophoretic leading ion was confirmed. Based on the dithionate ion, new electrolyte systems for the determination of chloride were used. One system was optimised for the determination of chloride and other low-molecular-mass anions and applied to the analysis of waste water and drinking water. The water samples were analysed in parallel by ion chromatography and compared with the isotachophoretic results.
