- Should we screen for misophonia in patients with eating disorders? A report of three cases.
- Kluckow H1, Telfer J, Abraham S.Author information 1School of Medicine, University of Notre Dame, Sydney, Australia.AbstractIn this case report, the authors describe three cases of misophonia in people with eating disorders. Misophonia is a condition where a specific trigger sound provokes an intense emotional reaction in an individual. Case 1 is a 29-year-old with childhood eating issues, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa whose trigger was a high-pitched female voice. Case 2 is a 15-year-old diagnosed with anorexia nervosa after misophonia onset. Her trigger was people chewing and eating noisily. Case 3 is a 24-year-old woman who presented with anorexia nervosa prior to misophonia onset. Her trigger was the clinking and chewing of her mother and aunt eating cereal. All three cases identified an eating-related trigger sound with a violent aversive reaction and coping mechanisms involving eating avoidance or having a full mouth. Misophonia may be associated with presentations of eating disorders. This case report adds to the literature about the presentation of misophonia. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. - Eye movements during action preparation.
- Vlaskamp BN1, Schubö A.Author information 1Cognition for Technical Systems, Experimentelle Psychologie, Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, Munich, Germany. b.vlaskamp@yahoo.comAbstractLooking at actions of others activates representations of similar own actions, that is, the action resonates. This may facilitate or interfere with the actions that one intends to make. We asked whether people promote or block those effects by making eye movements to or away from the actions of others. We investigated gaze behavior with a cup-clinking task: An actor shown on a video grabbed a cup and moved it toward the participant who next grabbed his own cup in the 'same' or in a different, 'complementary', way. In the 'same' condition, participants mostly looked at the place where the actor held the cup. In the 'complementary' condition, gaze behavior was similar at the start of the actor's action. To our surprise, as the action reached completion, participants started to look at the cup's site that corresponded to the grabbing instruction for their own action. A second experiment showed that this effect grew with delay of the go-signal. This indicates that a reason for the effect may be to support memorizing the instructed action. The bottom line of the study is that passively viewed scenes (passive in the sense that nothing in the observed scene is manipulated by the viewer) are scanned to support preparation of actions that one intends to make. We discuss how this finding relates to action resonance and how it relates to links between representations of actions and objects.

- When neurons do not mirror the agent's intentions: sex differences in neural coding of goal-directed actions.
- Proverbio AM1, Riva F, Zani A.Author information 1Department of Psychology, University of Milano-Bicocca, Via dell'Innovazione 10, 20126 Milano, Italy. mado.proverbio@unimib.itAbstractIn the current research we used a neurolinguistic paradigm (N400), in which brain activation to semantically congruent and incongruent actions (with respect to the context) was compared in men and women. Twenty-three right-handed students viewed 260 pictures portraying people engaged in simple actions. Perception of plausible and understandable actions (e.g., smiling couple clinking glasses of champagne) was contrasted with that of implausible and unintelligible actions (e.g., businesswoman balancing on one foot in desert). ERP data showed early processing of the action's purpose in the female brain, with a larger parietal N200 to understandable behavior. Source reconstruction (swLORETA) located the neural generators of this effect in the inferior/parietal, left inferior/frontal, left and right premotor areas, right cingulate cortex, right superior/temporal and extra-striate cortex belonging to the so-called "human mirror-neuron system (MNS)". Anterior N400 discriminative response (implausible-plausible) was greater in women than men. The data suggest that congruent/incongruent actions are processed differently from the two sexes, with a prevalence of limbic and cingulate activation in women, and orbito/frontal one in men, along with a right STG activation of comparable amplitude in men and women.
