Amitosis is the process by which a cell directly separates, not to be confused with mitosis. Amitosis divides relatively simply, as the nucleus and cytoplasm are directly cut in two. Unlike regular mitosis, no spindles are involved in amitosis. There is also a lack in the formation and appearance of chromosomes. Amitosis is a rare event, but sometimes it is very necessary[1] and has been described as a secondary process of cell division in larger life forms, a "forerunner of degeneration".[2] During binary fission in amoeba, the nucleus divides amitotically into two, which is followed by the division of cytoplasm.
