The absence of pulsation and the systolic bruit described by Von Wahl were no doubt due to the presence of the large axillary haematoma, and an examination immediately after the shooting might have shown them present. Von Wahl's sign is of great assistance, however, in cases when external hemorrhage and the presence of haematoma are wanting, as in wounds of the popliteal artery by a small-calibre bullet, and under such conditions the presence of the systolic bruit indicates incomplete rupture.
